Use the links below to download course databases for each of three University of California campuses, as well as Stanford. There are more than 800,000 records of course names and descriptions, and many records include professor identification numbers which correspond to the faculty database available here. All data are stored in comma-separated files. In addition to our processed databases, you will also find links to the universities’ (raw) scanned course catalogs below.
If you want to play with these data without downloading and analyzing them yourself, take a look at this interactive dashboard!
Note: These databases were produced using the formatted optical character recognition (fOCR) protocol developed by UC-CHP, which computationally processes scanned books into computer-readable databases. The resulting output is somewhat error-prone. Please see Bleemer (2018) for details on the construction and quality of these data.
UC Berkeley Course Catalog, 1900-2011

Notes: The Profs1 and Profs2 fields, where populated, correspond to the ID number of the faculty member(s) listed as teaching the course. The Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer fields indicate whether the course was listed as being taught in that semester or quarter. The Taught field indicates whether the course was listed as being taught at all in that year. The Area and General Area fields are at the discretion of UC-CHP for summary purposes.Recommended Citation
